Latest "Goins- Ons" On the Farm...

I have been so excited to get our garden planted... since, oh, January?! And Thursday, my WONDERFUL hubby tilled the garden and tilled some sod up in between my 2 gardens. So, now I have one big garden, I am guessing about 800 sq. ft. or more. I am also going to try to plant SOME things in my flower beds, like maybe some lettuce??? We will see...

Hubby also pruned some overgrown apple trees. We have lived here for almost 4 years, and they have always produced LOTS of apples but they are all spotted up from bugs. Any ideas for organic apple tree spray???

Here is my garden and apple trees:

YAY! Now, I am going to be planting potatoes soon.... don't know what else. I will probably plant my lettuce soon too, so I can get at least 2 growings in this year...

Anybody else working on gardens?

The boys also painted their 2 bee hives this weekend. Now they are all ready to set up! We should be getting our order of bees in about 3 weeks or so! I hope we are ready!

Yesterday morning, we had a baby chicken hatch! Remember all of the trouble that we had??? Well, now we have chicks! Only 2 hatch as of last night at 10:30pm, when I went to bed. The rest hatched at various times during the night. Needless to say, I was up and down all night. The incubator is in our unfinished Master Bath... So I could hear them all night! We actually hatched quite a few!

I wanted to show you all what a hatching looked like! So, I took a video of it, and here it is. Don't mind my sleepy voice... I am just... well, SLEEPY!

The video is about 9 minutes:

Amazing, isn't it? In exactly 21 days, an egg goes from the hen- You can eat the egg at this point, and no baby. But, if you so choose, can hatch the egg by placing in an incubator, keeping at a temp of 99.5 degrees, and turning a few times a day. Then at the end of 21 days, one of those baby chicks will pop out! I love it.

Hope you enjoyed it. As of right now, we have 13 chicks. And I think I heard more chirping coming from the incubator... I am thankful for the chicks that we got this time! These will be happy egg layers just like the rest!

We have our hive set up with sugar water in it, hoping to attract a swarm on our own. If that doesn't work, a friend is headed to NC in April to get bees for us and a few others.

I have already planted peas and this week will plant my potatoes and lettuce. Can't wait!

Thank you for sharing this video. I had never before seen chicks hatch. It was interesting to see how tired they are afterward and then how curious one of the chicks was about the whole process of the next chick.

We loved watching this. My girls saw chicks being born for the first time since we've always bought day old chicks in the past. Thanks for sharing!
