Party's Over...

That's right, I'm back!  And still trying to recover from not sleeping at all the first night and just a little the LAST night of vacation!  Poor me, right?  Ha!
From the pool of the house we rented, at dusk.

Well, we did have a great time, but we can't LIVE on vacation, can we?  Though I would love to try it, reality of life calls us back.  Plus, who can leave some of the precious furry faces that we have at home?  Not me!

Well, we arrived back LATE on Friday night, well I guess more like EARLY Saturday morning!  It was crazy going from Florida, who is starting to have their Spring with all of their grass starting to green, to Indiana where everything was covered in a few feet of snow!  Talk about a big change!

When we got home...
But, you quickly get used to it, though I hate to hide my skin now, because I actually FINALLY have some color on it!  Lilly White is NOT a color, tan... now that looks nice!  But, we have to hide our tans under socks, and sweaters.  Oh well...

I have to tell you though, that I am excited to be back, and excited to share some fun things that we will be doing in the coming weeks and months.  And maybe some giveaways!  Woot!  But that will all come soon.  Well, after I get the house back in order and when I catch up on that sleep...  Don't worry, it won't take long. Until then, I want to hear what kind of weather you've been having...  Please share, I want to know I didn't loose all of you while I was away!

What kind of weather have you been having?  Any snow?  Spring like weather (jealous!)?  Please share!

What is Your Favorite Christmas Movie?

I'm an oldies gal...  I would LOVE to have lived in the 50's- early 60's.  So naturally, I guess, my FAVORITE Christmas movie is "It's a Wonderful Life"...  My SECOND favorite is White Christmas...  I love the story lines, I love the simplicity of life then.  And in "White Christmas", I love the singing and dancing!

Which movie or movies do you love to watch this time of year, and why?  Please share!

What is YOUR Purpose?

Why do you garden, have chickens, raise a cow, maybe milk a goat?

Do you do it because you have decided to be a "farmer"? Is it because you saw a cool website of these people who were totally organic, and you thought that was pretty hip? Maybe because one of your good friends has started doing some organic farming, and you are kinda tagging along, seeing how it works?

What ever your purpose is, you need to REMEMBER it. You need to weekly, if not daily reflect back to that purpose and ask yourself if you are keeping on track to that purpose? Is there any TRACK to keep on, in your purpose?

If you are doing it because it looks cool, or because "so and so" is doing it, save yourself some time and money and stop now. You MAY be able to make it with that purpose, but chances are slim.

You have to have an idea, a dream, a GOAL that DRIVES you. THAT is your purpose. That will drive you for MUCH longer than a "fad".

SO what if you started out thinking it would be cool, and then now you really want to DO this? Decide your purpose. Why do you want to do this? Money? Recognition? We may as well stop there if those are going to be your purposes! In farming, there isn't much money. Farming, farming for health, farming for families has started to become a job similar to a Steam Engine Conductor... nearly non-existent.

Yes, but I drive by farms all the time! HUGE ones!

You may... but those are most likely producing GMO corn or soy, working FOR a bigger company. A bigger company that tells THEM what to do, how to farm, WHAT to farm...

If you want to have an organic (or nearly organic) garden, meat, eggs, milk... You have to get yourself a purpose. Because when you are standing in your local farm supply store and all there is on the shelf for insecticides is chemical, you have to look back to your purpose. What about feed? GMO, or expensive organic? Maybe raise some grains yourself?

How far do you go?

That is where your purpose comes in handy!

OUR purpose is WORKING TOWARDS organic. We don't have money to burn. And to buy organic feed is going to take CA$H.

My husband works a more than full-time job, and I stay at home. We have 4 young children. Working towards that goal for us, is the best we can do. One step at a time.

Simplify. Our purpose is to try to improve our ways of doing things, slowly. Making things more organic, and more healthy. I always look back and imagine what it would have been like to live in the Great Depression. There were no frilly extras there. No boxed meals. No hoppin' in the car and running through a fast food drive thru because we didn't have time to make supper because of work.

Things were simple. Simplify. Does that mean we take out all of our luxuries? No. We still have ceiling fans, but we don't but use a window air conditioner a few days out of the entire year. DO we never eat fast food? Well, not if we can help it! We have gotten to the point that home raise chicken, organic carrots and potatoes and fresh baked bread is WAAAAY more enjoyable to us that a processed chicken sandwich and some grease fries with a super-sized soda.

SO what is YOUR purpose? How will you achieve that purpose? Where do you see yourself in a month? In a year? 5 years? How will you get there? Where do you find your inspiration? Who tries to knock you off course? Who or what will cause the most resistance in your journey?

Are YOU READY?

What is your purpose?

Happy Spring!

There are starting to be signs of Spring all around. Including the nutty weather forecasts that get changed every few HOURS... Spring is amazing. Spring is beautiful.

The buds on the trees, the Robins, the new life, the new growth, and FINALLY getting to start plants inside for my soon-to-be garden outside!

They are growing now! And I am so excited, seeds grown are money saved to me! You pay $1 for seeds, you harvest MUCH, MUCH more. It's not too late, if you would like to start seeds inside, to start!

How many of you are starting seeds inside this year???

Composting...

I tried about a year ago to start composting. At that time, my wonderful hubby tried to make sure he threw stuff into the compost bucket, but wasn't all in it. He just dumped the items out into a field. On a pile, but it quickly was nothing. No pile, no nothin'.

So, I decided the other day to start back up again. I was wondering how many of you save your egg shells, veggie scraps, food scraps (no meat or dairy!) for the compost?

For a few days, I am going to be asking that you take this poll for me that is at the top of the blog. Then on Monday, I will share some info with you, and HOPEFULLY make some new composters out there!

Thanks for participating, in advance! :)

Question: What is Your Favorite Garden Vegetable?

Just seeing if you all are awake out there on this cold, COLD day...

What is your favorite garden vegetable? This can be something you grow yourself, or something you just like to buy... I don't mind if you have 2 favorites... or more. Whatever. You can also share if you DO like to grow it in your garden. You can even share the variety, if you'd like!

Hmmm... I will have to think a while on my own question. I will have to narrow it down from like 15 things... yikes! :)

Question! Self- Sufficiency?

One goal of mine for this new year, is to be able to glean more from the land we already own. I mean, we have 10 acres of land, and it is just sitting there! For over a year now, I have been wanting to do more, and I think the momentum is just starting to build now to do that.

I would LOVE to cut my grocery budget by even MORE because I have canned and frozen items from my garden and from our land! It IS possible to get nearly all of our food from this 10 acres! And I want to work towards doing better at using what we have!

I'm sure most of you have heard of the term "self- sufficient"? That is being able to produce on your own, all of the things required to live! I think the TOTAL self- sufficient life-style is impossible. I mean unless you are even making ALL of your clothing from things you produce on your land and such. Which, NO WAY am I going to do that here! Don't worry family, I won't show up at your home someday sporting a corn husk skirt and grass shirt... I'm just being silly! But, for sure, it WON'T happen. :)

So, have any of you thought about using what you have to grow your own food?

I have read about PLENTY of people who produce 100% of the veggies they eat in a year, and 50% or more of the fruits. And I think I COULD do that!

My husband got a deer this fall and I think we are set on burger for a while, as well as some roasts and stewing meat. And we also have chicken in the freezer and will probably get some meat chickens in the spring. The deer will save us LOTS of money. And they chicken will save us some, beside the fact of knowing it was raised and fed good things!

How many of you grow your own food? How much of it do you produce? Including meats? Take my survey above, if you would, please! I was just wondering how many of you are out there, wanting to more! Leave a comment also!

More to come on the HEALTH benefits of growing your own food!

Top 10 Favorite Movies for Kids

This is a tough one, but I am SO willing to go there!

What are the criteria for movies in our home (because they do HAVE TO pass some criteria!)? Well, I have boys ages 1-8, so they obviously have to be kid friendly. No cursing (or very little!) because it is extremely difficult to find movies with NONE, so we just use those times as a lesson in 'what NOT to do'. Funny is a BIG plus! My boys are all very funny little guys, and we need some new phrases to use in our lives! =)

Some TYPES of movies we LOVE, are classics! We love the old TV shows. They have the Lone Ranger, Lassie, Flipper, The Andy Griffith Show & Bonanza. All good shows that I don't have to worry about them learning anything bad off of. We love the old movies. We love older Disney movies! Apple Dumpling Gang, Herbie the Love Bug, etc rank among the top. We also love Tomas the Train. My boys at 7 & 8 will still sit down and watch it with the younger boys.

That being said, here is our top 10 Favorite Movies (in no particular order):
  1. Narnia - I know this wasn't under one of the above criteria, but it just is a favorite!
  2. Any Thomas DVDs
  3. Flipper
  4. Lassie (we have several, including movies)
  5. Herbie the Love Bug (the music is kind of groovy!)
  6. Polar Express
  7. Home Alone (this may have a curse word or two in it...)
  8. Apple Dumpling Gang
  9. Any of the Max Lucado movies for Kids, like Buzby the Bee, etc
  10. The Disney Vacation Planning Video - Yeah, I know. You can get these free from like Disney.com and it basically shows rides and attractions. But the boys love it because they have been there and know the places that they are talking about. They also dream of going there again someday...
So, there is our kid's top 10 favorites... They always watch a movie they like, like they watched 'Mouse Trap' last weekend... But their FAVORITES and ones approved by us, are the ones listed above.

What movie could your children absolutely not live without?

My Kitchen Doesn't Feel Like Home Unless...

I recently came across yet another great blog, Chickens in the Road. I was reading some of her past posts and came across a question she asked her readers, and I loved it. It made me think a little!

My kitchen doesn't feel like home unless....

How would you answer this question??? Here is how I would~

My kitchen wouldn't feel like home unless:
  • There were tons of pictures and kid's drawings and A+s on the refrigerator.
  • There were a wire basket with fresh eggs on the counter.
  • There were antique kitchen items dotted through the whole kitchen.
  • There was a little Koen dragging around his kitchen bench getting into the cupboards and on the counters, scavenging for food.
  • There was a candle lit on the counter, and smelling up the house.
  • There was a delicious SOMETHING baking in the oven.
  • There was an island full of Legos, drawings, crayons and pencils...
  • There were little sticky fingerprints all over the very edge of the counters.
  • There was the happy chatter of 4 little boys around my table.
  • There were those same little happy boys around the table saying their prayers to God, to keep us safe, to keep everyone in the whole wide world safe, and to help us to do the right things... just before a home cooked meal with my wonderful husband.
What blessings all happen in the kitchen! How would YOU answer this question? I would LOVE to hear!
