From Scratch...

It's Thursday and once again time to share what we made from scratch this week!  Hopefully now that temps are dropping (in SOME areas!), it will be easier to get into the baking mood!  And if you haven't been in the kitchen for a while, this is your challenge!  Make something new this week!  And then share with us next week how it went!  Not always are my attempts successful, but mistakes help us grow and learn!

This week, my sister and I made a trip to the bulk food store.  It is always so fun to have a list of new ingredients to try in a new recipe, and then to pick them out at the bulk food store.  This week my new ingredients were Sprouted Whole Wheat Flour and Sesame Seeds.  I used the Sprouted Whole Wheat Flour last night in homemade pancakes and in homemade granola...  It is GREAT for you and tastes good!

Some of our bulk food items.

You will also see that I have honey in the pic above.  I get that from my uncle.  We DO have our own honey bees, but we didn't collect any honey from them this year.  We are going to leave the honey for the colony this Winter.  Until then, I still need some GOOD honey to substitute for sugar in many recipes!

Last night, I was so happy to FINALLY have wheat flour, I made some of our favorite homemade granola...

A favorite in our family: Granola!
I didn't have the dried fruit, but I added mini chocolate chips.... Mmmm!

This week, I also made some muffins, and replaced the normal sugar amount with honey.  SO we don't have to feel so bad about eating them!  :)

I am looking forward to trying a few more recipes this week also...  I will share them if they turn out to be any good!

So what did YOU make this week?  Care to share?  Please either link up or share in the comments!

Hi Sarah- Today I am making a dessert called Ho-Ho cake! Yep, total chocolate! I live in Auburn and was wondering what bulk foods store you use? I have been looking for a good one with good prices and actually went to one in Angola but wasn't too impressed. There is one in Shipshe a friend goes to but I just haven't made it up there yet.

I was wondering to, is there a big taste difference in that flour? We're also trying to get away from all processed junk and I've been doing all kinds of new stuff. Just wondering cuz if hubby even thinks there might be something "wierd" in his food he won't even try it. Of course, what they don't know.....

Jenn- I went to E&S in Shipshewana, I had tried the place in Angola and there just wasn't much there. They get their things from E&S... but probably have a mark-up on it... You have to watch the things at E&S, some things are a great deal, like the regular oats ($.45/lb!!!) but some things aren't, like regular sugar...

The Sprouted Whole Wheat I haven't been able to taste a difference in! My hubby is the same way... He doesn't want all of that weird HEALTHY stuff... but he eats it all the time! He LOVES the granola, and that is nothing but good stuff, and MORE good things could probably be thrown in! In most things I can't go ALL OUT whole wheat, because my family doesn't like it.... But I sneak it in, and like in my granola, it is all whole wheat... So they just don't KNOW that they like it! :)
