Homemade Weed Killer- All Natural!
As you all know, I have been trying to make steps towards more natural/ organic. And one thing I have fought my poor hubby on for 2 years now, has been Roundup. He is used to spraying big rings around anything that he doesn't want weeds to grow around. I personally hate the big dead rings of grass. But that wasn't the reason I have fought him on this chemical spray. I cannot explain it as well as this article does, so go check it out.
So after last summer, weed whacking everything, hubby said with all of the fences, he was going to use Roundup this year. I couldn't let this happen! So I did some searches and found several recipes on homemade weed killer. Hubby was skeptical. And I have to say I was also. Can a homemade mix ACTUALLY work better than a CHEMICAL?
YES!!!
We tested this out the other day, and the grass is DEAD!
Here's the recipe:
Homemade Weed Killer
1 gallon White Vinegar
1 lb. 10 oz. container table salt
THAT'S it! Mix these two together in a container. We let ours sit for a few days, to let the salt dissolve. Hubby sprayed the grass under the fence line and within 24 hours the grass was dead! Hubby said this is better than Roundup! YAY!
For tough weeds, you may need to spot spray them later in the summer.
COST? Hubby said it's more. I bought a gallon of the vinegar for $1.99 and you can get a container of salt for $.33-.50. SO our cost for a gallon was less than $2.50.
I hope this is something you are willing to give a try. And give up the other weed killer for this natural alternative. Do it for your animals, your kids, your water, your food...

Alright...I'll try it!
andrea
Wow!!! I am so impressed. I will now have to try this.
WOW! Seriously I can't hardly even believe that it works...but I believe you. I think we might have to give this a whirl this year...We have already used round up around here though.....so next time I will keep this in mind. Thanks for the info!
Thanks!! I'm trying that!!
This kills everything? just weeds?
Holly- I would think it would kill any plants. I have read others that spray poison ivy with it, and I know it kills grass!
I've been using a similar recipe to kill poison ivy here as well as the weeds that grow up between the bricks on our patio. Round-up is NASTY stuff...it's one of the things that is almost certainly a cause of lymphoma :-(
Roundup causes miscarriages, kills frogs... it's bad stuff! We've gone organic and I'll never have to look at another field of dead grass again!
Now we need goats to take care of the thistles.
I think I will try it on our un-wanted blackberries.
Great tip!
In the past I have used that salt water leftover from homemade ice cream maker ... like I honestly need an excuse to make homemade ice cream. :)
