Some Motivation for You to Grow Your Own Food

This is the time of year when many of us are thinking about or (for those warmer climates!) actively working on our gardens.

I personally also love being able to raise our own eggs and meat.  I want to know how my animals (meat) are being treated.  I want to know what is going into my food.  And more.  Especially when it comes to feeding my boys.

I found this article via Dr. Mercola. You MAY want to click on it, and maybe even do a bit of research on your own...

The article is 16 Foods with Scary Surprises.  It gives 16 foods that we commonly buy from major companies, and the FDA requirements as far as ACCEPTABLE levels of rodent hairs, mammal excrement, larvae, fly eggs and more....  Yes, you heard it right, there are ACCEPTABLE levels....

I don't know about you, but this article motivates me even more to grow/ raise my own food!  What about you?  Check out the article, then come back and let me know what you think!

Sarah- A couple girlfriends and I were just talking about this exact thing the other day! We were talking about how scared we were to actually eat the food we had grown and preserved ourselves. Thinking about botulism and things can really scare a girl if you let it! Anyway, we all decided that there is no way that a big huge factory is even close to as clean as our own kitchens or as careful as we are. Therefore, we can talk ourselves out of our fears and enjoy God's blessings of black dirt, natural fertilizer, fresh veggies, fruit, and meat AND the knowledge and ability to preserve it ourselves! BTW- I like Dr. Mercola too!

It is amazing at all the bad stuff that is in purchased food. I'm so thankful I'm able to raise most of my food. Years and I mean years ago, I had opened a can of green beans and there was a grasshopper on top!! I have canned and frozen my fruits and vegetables since.

Sara, That any of that junk is allowable in food is just downright appalling. I was reading in the paper today that they have found milk in California and Washington contaminated with radiation. I think it was the FDA saying they were keeping an eye on it and it wasn't any where near a level to be concerned about. You mean they let some radiation into our milk? I could not believe it. I wonder if even buying organic would help. Just makes me want a cow or a goat or something. Also heard on the news this week that the FDA is now looking into food colorings in food again. I guess in the 70's they were ruled to be OK. Makes me think the FDA might not know what's best for me or my children. So I will continue my stride towards the most wholesome, homemade food that I can. The government does not have my health in mind, I do know that.

Here I thought that our biggest problem with store bought foods was chemicals, hormones, and artificial coloring! Looks like people like me who try to buy all organic are not even safe. Thanks for sharing the list and Dr. Mercola's article!

Amanda G- I know EXACTLY what you are talking about... I get a little anxious about whether the things I have canned or frozen is a QUALITY product... and always eating food that FIRST time, I am anxious also, BUT you are absolutely right, we know EXACTLY what we are canning. We take special care for our family's sake, and care about the END product. Thank you for sharing... I am SO glad I am not the only one! :)

Alla- Someday, I hope to say I am raising MOST of our food also... I am DEFINITELY working on it! It is an important endeavor!

Jenn- I had heard about the radiation! That amazes me SO much.... I can't believe ANY level of radiation is OK... Keep me updated on how you are doing with your process of growing your own!!! I don't have many people around me that are doing what I am, so it is great to have all of you to talk to on here so we can encourage each other in a process like this!

A Mini Begining- I guess things just aren't going to be the same as what we expect from ourselves... It IS sad that we can't even count on the FDA to make sure that we are safe...
